YOUTH DAY 2017 at the
Religious Education Congress

February 23, 2017

Held at the Anaheim Convention Center, 800 West Katella Ave., Anaheim, Calif. (just across from Disneyland).

Youth Day 2017 Theme

Our Theme this year is "What Are You Waiting For?"
The readings for Youth Day 2017 are about conversion, a change of heart. That change of heart is conveyed in each of the readings. The first reading from Sirach tells us to not delay, but rather turn to Jesus before it is too late. The Gospel from Mark gives us a look at what to expect if we hesitate or put off turning to the Lord, or if we lead others astray. He speaks of an unquenchable fire where suffering never ends. So why wait to convert and change our ways? The time is now! This year’s theme is a question: “What are you waiting for?”

“What Are You Waiting For?” is first and foremost a call to action, a wakeup call. Jesus invited us to turn to him and to not delay. However, it is also our call to reflection. It gives us a chance to examine our lives and our faith journey and encourages us to bring our hopes, fears, doubts, and dreams to the Lord. Christ awaits you with open arms. So, what are YOU waiting for?

What is Youth Day?

Youth Day is held annually on the Thursday of the Religious Education Congress weekend. It is a day just for youth from many different backgrounds from throughout the Archdiocese – and beyond – to participate in a Rally, Liturgy and Workshops focused just for them.

Who May Attend?

Youth Day is designed for all students from public and Catholic schools, grades 9 through 12. NOTE: Students below the 9th grade are not allowed to participate in this event and will be refused admission. One Adult Chaperone is required for each group of 10 students (maximum), all attending the same workshop. We recommend that you add one extra Chaperone name to your first registration.

Sacred Space at Youth Day 2017

Sacred Space will again be a part of the Youth Day experience. Sacred Space provides a quiet place to pray in the chapel and the opportunity to walk the labyrinth, where you can mindfully reflect on your life as you journey toward a fuller life in God. Included this year, you can pray the Stations of the Cross, focusing on the victims of human trafficking -- our modern-day slaves. You are invited to stand in prayerful solidarity with the victims. Hours for the day are from 7:30 am - 4:30 pm..

What Does Youth Day Cost?

Youth Day is separate registration and fee from the adult Congress days. The registration fee for Youth Day 2016 was $30 ($35 after the early fee deadline).

Volunteering at Youth Day

ADULT OPPORTUNITIES

Adult Volunteers -- The Youth Day staff invites any adult not chaperoning a parish or school group to be a volunteer for our event. Youth Day volunteers are assigned to a variety of positions throughout the day. This is a great way to experience Youth Day without the duties of being a chaperone – and to enjoy our event for free of charge. To volunteer for Youth Day 2017, all adults must be compliant with their diocese’s safe environment policies and procedures (fingerprinting/background checks, etc.) including compliance with required Safe Environment Adult Training. Please contact your diocesan Youth Ministry Office to learn details about your required programs. For more information about volunteering or to submit your name to be part of our team, please contact Erin Avila at layouthday@gmail.com or at (559) 259-8232. Come join the fun! We need you.

YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES

Here are some ways youth can be a part of Youth Day 2017!  Please note that all young people wishing to take part in any volunteer opportunity must register for the event and attend all trainings/rehearsals with supervision. Any expenses incurred while participating in these efforts is the responsibility of the adult registering the young person.

YOUTH DAY TRAINING DAY -- Do your young people want more than just to attend Youth Day 2017? Are they looking for ways to actively engage with their peers? If so, we are offering a vast array of opportunities for them to use their gifts and talents...Spirit Squad, Social Media, Emcee, Liturgical Movement, and Arena Liturgy Choir & Band. A Training Day will be held on October 29 at Holy Family Church (1527 Fremont Ave, South Pasadena, CA 91030). For more information on Training Day or Youth Day follow us on social media, visit our website or email us at layouthday@gmail.com.

Spirit Squad -- We are looking for a team of high-energy, dynamic high school-aged youth to be part of our Spirit Squad! Throughout the day the Spirit Squad will pump up the crowd with games and chants, promote our theme, help direct attention to social media, and transition participants to their events. If you are ready to show your spirit and have some fun, be sure to attend the training day on October 29, 2016 at Holy Family Church (1527 Fremont Ave, South Pasadena, CA 91030). For more information, please contact Dayrin Perez or Teresa Arredondo at layouthday@gmail.com.

Social Media -- We are seeking a team of high school aged youth to help us populate our social media platforms during LA Youth Day. There will be an application and interview process, concluding with a training day on December 19, 2015 at Holy Family Church (1527 Fremont Ave, South Pasadena, CA 91030). For more information, please contact Katie Trejo at layouthday@gmail.com .

Youth Day Emcee -- We are looking for young people in high school to introduce speakers and help with our general sessions. Do you like performing before large crowds? Do you like to help others have a good time? If you answered yes to these questions, come be part of this great day! Be an Emcee at Youth Day 2015. Don’t miss our training day on October 29, 2016, at Holy Family Church (1527 Fremont Ave, South Pasadena, CA 91030). For more information, please contact Christina Lamas at layouthday@gmail.com.

Visit the website for rehearsal location(s). For more information, please contact Ed Archer at MystroArch@gmail.com ; 661-992-0766. Do you love God and want to praise God with your heart, spirit, mind and body? Then this ministry is for you. Rehearsals will be on Saturday mornings in January and February at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Caρada. If you are interested, please contact Kristina Ortega at layouthday@gmail.com .
