On Friday, May 4, 2007, we welcome students from St. Benedict School in Montebello to an online Chat with Cardinal Roger Mahony. And a thank you to them for participating; they are only the fifth school ever to be involved in such an event!Cardinal Roger Mahony was born in Hollywood, Calif., and was ordained a priest in 1962 for the Diocese of Fresno, Calif. While there, he taught social work at California State University, Fresno. In 1975, he was made Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Fresno by Pope Paul VI. That year, California Governor Jerry Brown appointed Bishop Mahony as the first chair of the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board, where he worked with Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers and various growers in the state to resolve labor disputes.
In 1980, Bishop Mahony was appointed as Bishop of the Diocese of Stockton. Only five years later he was appointed to lead the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the first native Angeleno to hold the office. Bishop Mahony was elevated to Cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1991.

Elizabeth: What’s your favorite thing about being the cardinal?
mario: how many times do you go to Rome a year?
Briana: do you consider the cathedral your greatest accomplishment, because I know you played a big part
Cardinal Mahony: I just happened to be here the time of the Northridge earthquake in 1994; any Archbishop would have built the Cathedral. The most important project for me is not the Cathedral; rather, the Catholic Education Foundation which gives scholarship to children in need to attend our Catholic schools.
Nicholas: As it just so happens, my grandparents visited St. Peter's Basilica for my great-aunt's canonization.
Daniel: THAT IS GREAT
Cardinal Mahony: Eliz has been to Rome; the rest of you need to go also!
Briana: that is very interesting; could you elaborate on the foundation a little more?
Alex: Can you explain why we kill in war?
MaGaLy: YEA ii WANT TO BUT ii CANT AFFORD iiT
Chris: I’ve also been to rome, i have family there
Briana: me either! : (
Daniel: WHAT DO U THINK ABOUT THE WAR IN IRAQ

Cardinal Mahony: 8th grade first.

MaGaLy: WE ARE STUDiiNG ABOUT MAKiNG RiiGHT CHOiiCES
Peter: about life
Briana: About Mary and her special month, which is May!

Cardinal Mahony: Some really good topics. You know what is really important? Choosing the right friends!!
MaGaLy: ii LOVE MiiSS CLEVER
Elizabeth: haha me too :]
Elizabeth: Yes.
Peter: she's our religion teacher
Nicholas: There is a tapestry of my great-aunt in the cathedral.
Daniel: THAT IS TRUE
anthony: do you like being the cardinal of Los Angeles? Why?
Cardinal Mahony: It is a great challenge serving as the Archbishop of LA, but very rewarding also.
MaGaLy: iiN WHAT WAYS?
Cardinal Mahony: Nich. who is your great aunt?
Elizabeth: What places have you been to while doing your job?

Cardinal Mahony: Nich. Terrific!!
Chris: what high schools have you attended?
Nicholas: Thank you, 'tis a great honor for my family and I.
Cardinal Mahony: I went to the high school seminary in my days; it was a day high school downtown.
Briana: COOL!!!
Cardinal Mahony: After that, I went to St. John's College and Theology school up in Camarillo.
Briana: Interesting!
Daniel: IM GOING TO ST JOHN HIGH SCHOOL
Elizabeth: that`s nice.
anthony: What does it feel being the head of the Archdiocese?
Cardinal Mahony: Lots of challenges here: we have over 5 million Catholics, and so many of our Churches are too small.
Briana: Oh,
MaGaLy: WHY DONT YOU EXPAND?
Daniel: WHAT DO U THINK ABOUT THE IMMIGRATION MARCH
Briana: We should make bigger ones
MaGaLy: iiF you had a day off what would you do?
Cardinal Mahony: Too many great questions!
Briana: SORRY!
Cardinal Mahony: It is hard to get a whole day off. However, I just planted a nice vegetable garden at the Cathedral, and it's neat watching all of the plants grow.
Elizabeth: yahh
Briana: Thats nice!
alexandra: what are your hobbies?
Elizabeth: Is planting one of your hobbies?
MaGaLy: THATS NiiCE WHAT DiiD U PLANT?
Cardinal Mahony: Planted corn, tomatoes, squash, peppers.
MaGaLy: ii DONT LiiKE ANY OF THAT :[ HAHAHAHA
MaGaLy: Y DONT YOU ViiSiiT OUR SCHOOL?
Chris: can you explain why we can kill in war?
Cardinal Mahony: Chris: war should always be the last resort. Pope John Paul II often said that war is a sign of the failure of the human community to find non-violent ways to deal with our problems.
alexandra: will I ever see you in person?
Briana: I miss him.
Briana: (Pope John Paul II)
Nicholas: But what if said war is justified?
Chris: what is the biggest problem the church is facing right now?
MaGaLy: SOME TiiMES WAR iiS NEEDED
Elizabeth: H0w SH0uld we judge 0ur g0vernment leaders?
Cardinal Mahony: Nich. Be sure to look in the Catholic Catechism; you will find a good discussion about the Catholic "just war theory." War is always the last resort.
Alex: What do you think about the war in Iraq?
anthony: Do you every what to become pope?
mario: your eminence what is your opinion about the police violence in the riot on May 1?
Cardinal Mahony: I was in the March and at the Rally on May 1st. Both the marchers and the police could have been better prepared and had better plans throughout.
Briana: I agree completly
Elizabeth: When did the Holy Days of Obligation start?
Cardinal Mahony: Elizabeth--not sure, but again, the Catholic Catechism is a great resource. Or, go to Google and you can find out.
Elizabeth: Thanks.
Ben: should the church go against same sex marriage?
Cardinal Mahony: Ben: we believe that the term "marriage" should be limited to one man and one woman in a life-long commitment.
Briana: too true
Ben: great, thanks
mario: thankx, your eminence have you ever had the chance to become a step higher than a cardinal?
Cardinal Mahony: No, I have no interest in being Pope!!
Nicholas: You are quite the modest one, Your Eminence.
MaGaLy: WHEN DO YOU PLAN TO ViiSiiT OUR SCHOOL?
Cardinal Mahony: Unfortunately, I don't get the opportunity to visit our elementary schools. I do visit our high schools, however, usually for Mass; or for football games.
Briana: why/
MaGaLy: Y?
MaGaLy: WE WOULD LiiKE YOU TO COME AND ViiSiiT US AT ONE OF OUR SCHOOL MASSES SO THAT WE CAN ALL GET A CHANCE TO MEET YOU
anthony: what do you think about St. Benedict school?
Cardinal Mahony: MaG: Unfortunately, it does not look promising to come for a school Mass.
MaGaLy: WELL iiF YOU WOULD EVER LiiKE TO COME YOU WiiLL BE WELCOMED AND WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU HERE
Peter: which one of our president's ideas do you support?Nicholas: if any.

alexandra: what is the biggest problem are church is facing?
Cardinal Mahony: Alex. No single biggest problem. We certainly need more priests to keep up with the growing Catholic population.
Alex: oUr religion teacher tells us every Sunday we celebrate Easter Sunday...can you explain more about this?
Cardinal Mahony: Alex--yes, each Sunday is a renewal of that First Sunday, the day Jesus rose from the dead. That's why the early Church began gathering for Eucharist on that day.
Daniel: HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO BECOME CARDINAL?
Cardinal Mahony: Daniel: it is not a matter of years; rather, when the Pope decides to appoint someone a Cardinal, that is how it happens. I was made a Cardinal in 1991.
Alex: Which one of the president’s ideas do you support and which do you not support?
Briana: Do you like sports?
Cardinal Mahony: Alex--I don't get into such discussions. However, we are pushing Congress and the President to pass meaningful immigration reform legislation.
alexandra: do you anyone who has been sent to Iraq?
Cardinal Mahony: Alex. Yes, lots of people. Fr. Kevin Nolan went over as a chaplain, but he is home now.
mario: your eminence do you think the catholic church will ever reunite?
Nicholas: I believe that my esteemed colleague, Mr. Mario, means to ask if the Greek Orthodox and Catholic Churches will ever reunite.
alexandra: do you ever wonder how important you are in people's lives?
Cardinal Mahony: Mario--it is my constant prayer that we can unite all of the Christian Churches some day.
anthony: did you ever think about getting married before you joined the church?
Chris: can a cardinal excommunicate a catholic?
mario: thankx, your eminence have you ever questioned your faith?
Cardinal Mahony: Chris: yes, but that is always a last resort. I have never done so.

MaGaLy: OOO :]
